Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s recordable media was just making its way into households as a consumer electronic device, either an expensive reel-to-reel deck or a convenient cassette recording deck. Just imagine sneaking one of those into a concert these days. More likely, the stealth recorder of choice today would be a mini-disc recorder or your handphone. Small enough to fit your pocket.
But Michael Millard was different. He arrived early at concerts near his home, pulled out a wheelchair from the trunk of his car and proceeded to wheel himself into the arena as an invalid. He managed to secure front row "seats", almost always front and centre. Hidden underneath his wheelchair was a Nakamichi stereo cassette deck hooked up to two high-quality AKG mics. Security guards in those days were probably unaware of such goings on.
His recordings were much sought after for their quality - capturing the expanse of the stage plus the great ambience of the halls. His close proximity eliminated any echo from his recordings. All the instruments recorded right off the front speakers. Plant’s voice is crystal clear. But Millard had a habit of marking his tapes when he copied them for another collector or fan. He would, for instance, lower the levels when transferring the audio to a VHS tape or lower the volume in mid-song when making a cassette copy. It has been said he detested bootleggers who pressed up his recordings onto vinyls or CDs to sell. To that end, he kept a log of all the trades he made with clear indications of what markings he did to the tapes. That way, he knew which of his trades were sent to bootleggers.

This show has been bootlegged (pressed to silvers) as "The Late Great Millard Tapes". The bootleg is not in the linage of this show. I guess you could call this pre-bootleg.
Notes from Mustardpie:
Torrented by The Hirsute Swine at The Traders' Den, 2004.11.28
Torrented by Mustardpie at Easytree, 2004.12.12
reseeded at DimeADozen, 2006.03.24
In the forum on this show at The Traders' Den The Hirsute Swine said that he extracted these files from a CDR with EAC in secure mode. The log files are included in this torrent.
The CDR was made from a DAT that was a copy of a single Millard tape. The original linage listed as MIllard Master > DAT [...] suggests that Millard recorded the DAT--that's not so. "Tape mastered by Millard" would likely be more accurate. This recording is nevertheless a pre-bootleg source with known lineage. As such it should be superior to the various bootlegs made from potentially higher generation sources.
HRV CDR 026 "Cruel but Fair" is made from a Millard tape, but without lineage, and with a piece of the show from Boston filling the tape-flip gap in Have a Cigar. "The Late Great Millard Tapes", Highland HL644/645/646 (3 disk set) is another bootleg of this recording, but of unknown lineage, and files from that bootleg circulating amongst traders may have been remastered and transcoded (see
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.kerr/other_PF.htm). The files in this torrent are more directly straight from the source tapes.
The only file in the original torrent that I have modified this text file. I modified the lineage in the light of information from the poster of the original torrent, and I added these notes. The FLACs, fingerprints and .log files are exactly as I have received them from the original torrent. I offer this torrent here only to share this great recording of a great show to a wider audience. Those who acquired this show from previously can thus easily help seed by adding this info file to their directory.
Artwork included.

This was one of the first shows I ever downloaded, back in the heyday of Sharing the Groove. The vague DAT > WAV lineage leaves something to be desired, but I have not seen this show circulate with any more detailed lineage.
All in all this is a decent show overall, and the longest ever version of Dazed, if I recall correctly. This tape is far hissier than EV's Deep Throat, yet I still find the fuller sound superior to the bootleg release.

Winston's Notes: I was contacted last summer by an FBO member named Wayne Catalde. He let me know that he had
the Cassettes and I was welcome to remaster them for a future tree as his way of giving back to the
Zep Community. I was honored to do so. I know many of you Zep fans probably have 1/2 dozen versions
of this historic show. The story behind these Cassettes is what makes this so special to me. From
the local tape shop were Mike bought his blanks. A person working there noticed this same guy coming in
and buying up big amounts of blanks. He asked what they were for and Millard told him that he taped concerts.
They became friends and made a deal, Free blanks for Mikes taped shows.
I have listened to alot of "low gen" sources for this show. They all have "Millard Markings" most common
are cuts during No Quarter & Guitar solo. Those 2 songs are complete. Mike would also put in pulse channel
dropouts after his tape flips & and would put silent spots on some of the songs. I guess that is how he
kept track of his trades. These are clean from those "Markings" and they are the best sounding of all the
low gen versions I have heard.

Remastering is just a Hobby.. take it and enjoy or just pass on it. The choice is yours.
This version is never meant to be definitive.
Remaster Notes - I got this source from an FBO Download, Thanks to "wizzy" for posting it and "Riverside Productions"
for the initial mastering. The sound was unaltered and sounded "bland" and just really needed to be balanced & beefed up.
I added a few seconds of Plantations after Dancing Days that was missing from another Millard Source. You will be able to
tell the difference of the sources.

Big Log
This is a four album set of vinyl broadcast discs used to distribute the King Biscuit Flower Hour to radio stations affiliates in the USA for weekly broadcasts. Long sought after by Zeppelin & Plant fans alike, only part of this short series has been available from the broadcast tapes until now. The quality you'll hear here surpasses that of previous "leaks" of the SBD material, especially the definition of the high frequencies.
Does anybody remember.... dynamics? The range on this recording is spectacular - nice and open - no clipping.
Absolutely ZERO compression, limiting or EQ applied to this transfer. This is CLEAN.
The only thing I did to this was meticulously remove any noticeable pops or crackles. I did NOT just run a generic pop filter on the entire set of audio, as that usually harms the recording in an unpleasant way.
This set runs as the broadcast did, with one exception: I removed all but one Honda Shadow commercial (they were all exactly the same and played at EVERY break). All other commercials are left in place. This entire transfer is precisely tracked so you can easily skip parts you don't want to hear. There are 43 tracks total, filling 3CDs:

This set was rescued from a record store by Krambo199 with real money. The album covers are plain white (since this set was meant to be played once for broadcast and discarded) and the price sticker from the record shop is intact. Without disclosing what he paid, let me assure you that Krambo199 is being very generous in offering this to the community for free - especially since it is so rare. From what I can tell, this is the first time it has been available in full, including the "D" sides that feature cuts mastered for broadcast in regular rotation, outside the King Biscuit show.
Enjoy!
