12-06-96 Aladdin Theatre, Las Vegas, NV

1: Wilson, Peaches en Regalia, Poor Heart, Also Sprach Zarathustra-> Llama, You Enjoy Myself, Cars Trucks Buses, Down With Disease-> Frankenstein

2: Julius, Sparkle, Mike’s Song-> Simple, Harry Hood-> Weekapaug Groove#, Sweet Adeline, Good Times Bad Times

E: Harpua* > “Wildwood Weed” Rap$* > Harpua* > I Wanna Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart# > Harpua*-> Suspicious Minds^-> Harpua > Suzy Greenberg**

#With vicious start/stop jamming. *Most of Harpua had Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde from Primus. After the opening, Les did a rap about a weed or something like that. Then more Harpua and the Jimmy story (Jimmy and Poster Nutbag going to Vegas). They stop and camp. At the campsite, they start yodelling. $Based on the song from Jim Stafford’s “Spiders and Snakes” album. #With yodelers. John McEuen and Heather and Anamiekl August did a country/yodel tune. The story continues, Jimmy & Poster meet up with four “Elvii” on the edge of Las Vegas and have a duel. ^The four “Elvii” sing the first few verses of “Suspicious Minds” and then Fish continues. Jimmy (Fish?) is victorious. Then the dog/cat fight. Harpua wins and the song finishes. At some point everyone returns and then Brian Mantia, the drummer for Primus, shows up for “Suzie Greenberg”. **All of the above musicians; with “Suzie Q” jam lead by one of the Elvii.

As an added treat, I found a NEW soundboard that was leaked onto the net. This is from his 1995 tour where they brought Trey onstage to do a ripping version of Jimi Thing. It is pretty killer. Enjoy!!

Carter Drum Intro>

Dancing Nancies>
Best of What’s Around
Rhyme and Reason
Jimi Thing
Recently …>
Water/Wine Jam …>
Ants Marching
Encore:
Tripping Billies

Guests:
Trey Anastasio

Notes:
DMB and Big Head Todd and the Monsters began a tour together. They alternated headlining (depending upon which band was more popular in which town). The Ugly Americans also served as an “opening” band for both bands. This is why, until 3/17/95, some DMB shows have encores, and some do not. It just depended if they were opening or not.

Both shows are killer soundboards.

Phish

6/11/1994 Red Rocks Amphitheatre Morrison CO

Saturday, June 11, 1994
Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO

Set I: Wilson > Chalk Dust Torture, You Enjoy Myself -> Rift, Down with Disease, It's Ice > Tela, Stash
Set II: Also Sprach Zarathustra > Run Like an Antelope, Fluffhead, Scent of a Mule, Split Open and Melt, The Squirming Coil, Maze, Contact > Frankenstein
Encore: Suzy Greenberg
Show Notes: This show marked the breakout of Frankenstein, which hadn't been played since July 26, 1991 (326 shows). This version of SOAM is a fan favorite. Fluffhead was played after a group of screaming fans had been requesting it for the entire beginning of the show. Antelope included a tease of the Odd Couple theme.

Friday, August 16, 1996

Set II: Split Open and Melt, Sparkle, Free, The Squirming Coil, Waste, Talk, Train Song, Strange Design, Hello My Baby, Mike's Song -> Simple -> Contact -> Weekapaug Groove
Set III: Makisupa Policeman, Also Sprach Zarathustra > Down with Disease -> NICU, Life on Mars?, Harry Hood -> Fireworks Jam
Encore: Amazing Grace
Show Notes: Waste through Strange Design were performed on the acoustic mini-stage. Great, solid show from top to bottom. Disease was unfinished. Listen for Mary Had a Little Lamb teases at the start of the second set.

8/17/1996 Clifford Ball Plattsburgh NY

Saturday, August 17, 1996
The Clifford Ball, Plattsburgh Air Force Base, Plattsburgh, NY

Set I: The Old Home Place, Punch You in the Eye, Reba > Cars Trucks Buses, The Lizards, Sample in a Jar, Taste, Fee -> Maze, Suzy Greenberg
Set II: The Curtain, Runaway Jim, It's Ice, Brother, Fluffhead, Run Like an Antelope, Golgi Apparatus, Slave to the Traffic Light
Set III: Wilson, Frankenstein, Scent of a Mule, Tweezer, A Day in the Life, Possum > Tweezer Reprise
Encore: Harpua
Show Notes: Before the second set, Trey paid tribute to Aaron Stein of Syracuse, who was front row center for every show of the tour. The first Brother since August 2, 1993 (257 shows) featured Ben and Jerry on guest vocals. Wilson included a Heartbreaker tease. Antelope featured a female acrobat twirling in the rigging, suspended above the stage in a circus-like fashion. Scent of a Mule featured a Page/Fishman duel instead of the typical Page/Trey duel. Tweezer had big trampolines on each side of the stage and more circus shenanigans. A stunt plane circled overhead during Tweezer Reprise. The plane trailed above during Harpua (first since Halloween 1995, or 64 shows), which was unfinished.

12/2/1983 University of Vermont Burlington VT *set II only

Friday, December 2, 1983
Harris-Millis Cafeteria, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT

Check: Jam (with audience present)
Set I: Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, Proud Mary, In the Midnight Hour, Squeeze Box, Roadhouse Blues, Happy Birthday
Set II: Scarlet Begonias > Fire
Show Notes: Trey, Mike, Fish, and Jeff Holdsworth recall being billed as "Blackwood Convention" for this show (though no one is certain what band name was used), which is believed to be their first public gig together. The band was short on equipment, so a hockey stick was used as a microphone stand. Between sets, the DJ spun some Michael Jackson and Trey drummed along to the album. The house music (which included more Michael Jackson) was presumably turned up after Fire to drown out the band. The setlist may be incomplete, though, as the master tape contains nothing after Trey's sarcastic comments about Michael Jackson following Fire. All songs are, of course, live debuts. While this show is often billed as an ROTC Halloween Dance that took place on October 30, 1983, this is incorrect. The master copy of the recording of this show, as unearthed by Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro, contains a handwritten note that pegs the date as December 2, 1983. In recent discussions with Kevin, band members confirmed that they recall rehearsing for this show over the Thanksgiving Break, and that the show was a Christmas semi-formal. Also, though many ROTC students lived in the dormitory (Mike's dorm at the time), it was not an ROTC-sponsored event; it was a dorm dance in a predominantly ROTC dorm.

This has always been one of my favorite Phish shows; in fact, it introduced me to the band. (I'd actually heard Fee, Sample In A Jar, Limb By Limb, and Heavy Things before and loved them; they came as filler songs in iTunes when I got my iBook - I never realized that this was the same Phish, though.) I was a huge Pink Floyd fan, massive collector of bootlegs, and this always kept popping up in other collectors' trade lists. A jam band from the 90s covering DSotM, without a saxophone, synth, or backup singers.

I'd heard the three incarnations of the album that existed; the studio version (faithfully reproduced on the post-Waters P*U*L*S*E album, Roger Waters' 2006-2008 tours, and kind of played with on the legendary 1974 Wembley BBC broadcast), the 1972 version (played live before the album's release, as just a four-piece; minus sax, synth, singers, et cetera), and the Easy Star All-Stars reggae version which doesn't actually count but it's worth mentioning.
How would a 1998 Vermont jam band tackle it? It was worth the effort of getting the tape.

Phish's take on it was, although I never realized it when I first heard it, perfectly Phishy. David Gilmour's classic rocky distortion-laced sound was perfectly translated into Trey Anastasio's thoughtful jazzy style, Rick Wright's Hammond was halfway replaced by Page McConnell's piano, Roger Waters' plunky bass was funked up by Mike Gordon, and Nick Mason's tape-delayed plodding was replaced by Jon Fishman's awesomeness. However, a few things were added that really took creativity; Dick Parry's sax was either removed or replaced with a swirly Hammond, and Claire Torry had her trademark wail replaced by Jon Fishman's OTHER trademark wail.
It was awesome, and so was the rest of the show.

I first heard the more common taper-section source. It was nice, certainly better than the kind of thing Pink Floyd collectors have to put up with (my favorite examples are the two audience recordings from early 1970 from Croydon and Birmingham; the only performances EVER of "The Violence Sequence", which didn't even show up in the studio, but it sounds AWFUL; take, say, 1986.4.1 and multiply it by ten)... but with all the sparkly-clean soundboards and Live Phish, I got spoiled and this amazing show dropped off of my hard drive. I did come across a second FOB source, which was more upfront and clear, but the bass was distorted and it was just overpowering.

Then I figured out my way around an audio editor and got into matrixes. One thing led to another, and I made this.

I know there are two other sources; one is the B&K 4011 recording, but it really didn't sound substantially different from Source One (and was a tiny bit worse). The other is an AKG480 that I have never heard and can't find anywhere.

This is my first attempt at a matrix and an eTree upload. I hope I didn't make any mistakes, and if anyone thinks they can improve on this, please do so.

whoops, copied my signature from the other board...my bad!

anyway, BeringCrab updated his 12gig GD filebox/storage/whatever...

Sorry about not listing the shows but since I have to leave for the new job this sunday. I wanted to finish this before I left. GD is all SBD's the best sources available-many of them are C.Miller. The JGB pre-90 stuff is all SBD's best sources and the 2 1990 shows are killer audience. I hope you enjoy them!

I learned from my past mistakes on the tagging so these are all tagged the proper way and work on all types of mp3 players. They are 320bitrate mp3.

Just hit on the link and pick the show(s) you want.

Matinee Idols: Late Show

Released as a promotional companion disc to the band's live album Matinee Idols, Late Show finds the band taking chances on a number of a stretched-out numbers. Beginning with an introduction that comes off like a demented parody of Bill Graham's introduction of the Grateful Dead on One From the Vault, the band launches into "Mr. Blood," the relentless hardcore tune that keys off a set of the 'pods bizarre pop culture/sci-fi melange. Through several large jams based on classic rock covers (including the Who's "Sally Simpson" and Kingfish's "Jump for Joy"), the band runs through textbook examples of tension and release improvisation. On some levels, the band is the very epitome of a generic band, playing perfectly within the boundaries of what a jam band is. At the same time, the band does this incredibly well, from Max Verna's nuanced voice and Duane Allman-influenced guitar playing to Ted Marotta's straight-ahead drumming to Tom Pirozzi's relentlessly melodic basslines. It's okay, too, because the Seapods helped define the genre. It's hard to find a jam band having more fun.

I'm just gonna come out and say it. Doug Stanhope could rape your kids and it would be funny. Actually he would probably just do jokes about raping your kids, but I would laugh either way. Check this out.
