bump, this thread always deserves to be at the top.

In fact, this ought to be stickied, given its importance and contributions to our live music discussion board.

BLACK SABBATH
Cal Jam Festival
Ontario Motor Speedway
California
April 6, 1974

Soundboard Recording(unedited version) (released track removed)
Maxell MX-90 metal-particle cassette(rec'd in trade(No Gen known), 20-25 years old)>
Playback on JVC TD-595 DECK>
AIWA XC-RW700 Standalone burner>
EAC>FLAC>DIME

This has been something I've had for a long, long time, and every single time I've traded it, the person I've sent this to has been blown away at the upgrade from whatever source they had owned before. Since I've not seen this show on Dime, and folks claim that this is THE DEFINITIVE COPY, I thought I'd post it. Instead of posting a CD copy of the tape that I had, I borrowed the tape from the person I got my copy from. I'm glad I did, as his tape turned out to be a very old Maxell Metal particle tape, which is the way he rec'd it from a Zep trader at least 20 years ago.

I've heard of several different boot LP's that have been made of this show, and this is supposedly not from any of those. The recording is so clean and sharp that you can really hear every minute thing that happens on stage,,,,,comments that Ozzy makes under his breath, guitars being plugged and unplugged, every little thing, very loud and clear. Some pops audible between songs have been debated as being LP surface noise, but with constant plugging and unplugging going on between songs, I don't think that's the case. The main things that convince me that this is an actual source tape are the lack of cuts which would be indicative of a boot LP of this length(at least four sides of wax), and the inclusion of ALL of the between song dialogue INCLUDING almost 2 solid minutes between the main set and the encore of nonstop soundboard audience noise through the on-stage mics. None of that is common in the boot LP world. Even though the opening intro is missing, this is also the longest, most complete unedited version.... from what I've been told.

I am not a Sabbath collector by any means, so if anything here is not accurate, let me know.
I do believe, however, that this is VERY possibly the best version available of this amazing show!

Where is the TV footage????

Source Info

SBD (ShnID = 4524)
Source: DSBD > Cass? > DAT
Transfer: D8 > Active Oade > cmi8738 spdif in > Sforge 4.5 @48khz

AUD (ShnID = 85404)
Source: Neumann KM140s (90'xy,FOB) > Sony D3
Transfer: Tascam DA30MK2 > AudioPhile 2496 spdif in > Samplitude
Pro7 @48khz(resample ultra high 44.1k) > CDWAV > FLAC

---------------------------------------------------------

Notes on the Source Material

SBD (ShnID = 4524)
Source is marked as Cass? but I would bet anything it is from a
master source. The consistent speed throughout with very small,
almost no hiss present at all. Great sound, nicely balanced
with a bit more bass (Mike) in the mix.

AUD1 (ShnID = 31211)
Good sounding AUD. It does not have much crowd in the recording
which would indicate it was made at the SBD but still sounds as
if it was close to the stage (FOB). While this AUD doesn't do
much in adding crowd reaction and energy it to the matrix it does
a great job at adding a depth and richness to the straight SBD.

My 160GB ipod doesn't seem so monstrous all of the sudden

Thanks for all the great tunes.

Are there any Flaming Lips SBDs floating around out there?

Total Times:

Disc 2 - 1:17:48:72

General Notes:

Often overshadowed by the novelty of the night before, this was always
a favorite show of those I attended because of the great performances
by all band members. Highlights include a psychadelic ending on Iko
(w/Phil on vocals too), a moving China Doll out of a very innovative
modal jam post UJB, and a thunderous Dew out of Space.

Given the multiple sources available on the Llama, I decided to put the
effort into editing a matrix since I was never completely happy with
the SBD. The result is a worthwile listen, especially given that none
of the existing sources are complete.

- Sonic Quality/Matrix ratio
The SBD suffers from many issues, the main one being that it is extremely
compressed which not only kills the dynamic response, but introduces
hiss and some serious peak-shaving. The FOB AUD is nice and balanced,
while the Oade AUD has some low end added in post by Doug due to the
bass roll-off used on the Schoep mics (see txt below). As a result, I
employed no EQ nor Compression finding the blend between the SBD and
the FOB AUD to be quite full. The Oade AUD has more of the Coliseum
sound in it due to their proximity to the stage, while the FOB is closer
in proximity, but still picks some of the "room". Conceptually, all
I was trying to do here is to add some dimension to the SBD, which is
pretty flat, by using the ambience of the FOB AUD. The Oade AUD is
used mainly to patch spots where both the FOB and SBD were lacking in
coverage. The result is a lively but clear recording, hopefully close
to how it sounded at the show. If I had to guess the SBD/AUD ratio
would be somewhere between 3:1 and 4:1.

From Don Wolfe:
"I was just beginning to collect and trade Grateful Dead when I got this soundboard. At the time I was actually looking for a recording of the 8/27/72 Veneta show, which I had had the good fortune to see in person.Since the Springfield Creamery (run by Ken Kesey's brother Chuck) had put on the Veneta show, I figured they would know who might have tapes. So I called up and asked, and I ended up contacting the people who had filmed the concert for the "Sunshine Daydream" movie.I visited them at a house near Pleasant Hill in Ken Kesey's general neighborhood. They were reluctant to give me a reel-to-reel copy of Veneta since it was the soundtrack to their movie, but they did give me a cassette copy. During the time I was hanging around copying tapes, I found out that they had traveled along with the Dead on the Europe tour, and I ended up getting a reel-to-reel copy of their tape of the 5/26/72 show at the Lyceum in London. The source tape player was an amazingly compact machine, with all of the electronics and motors in a box (as well as I can remember) maybe 10 inches wide, 6 inches tall, and a couple of inches deep, with extension arms that could hold 10 1/2 inch reels. I made a couple of visits and on one of them I got to see an early screening of the movie. They set up a screen behind their house after dusk, and a bunch of people came over to watch. The picture and soundtrack were on separate films (the sound track was on magnetic film with sprocket holes) and had to be synchronized. Another time we all went swimming. They were kind and generous to me, and I will always be thankful that they were willing to share their recordings".

Raldo Schneider
"Strange Days"
Image

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...ndid=174701286

Check this guy out...one of the few decent musicians from my hometown of Cedar Falls, IA...I skipped out early on my own graduation party to see his band in 99 and it was one of the best times I've ever had. If I had to try to classify him, I'd put Raldo in the "outlaw country" category...pretty folksy, but not at all Nashville. Check this one out folks....my favorites are Cedar River Song, 21st Century Desperado, Iowa in the Winter, and Highway 13.

CF musician Raldo Schneider to be featured live at KUNI's Studio One
By MARY STEGMEIR, Courier Staff Writer

CEDAR FALLS --- Listening to a Raldo Schneider song is like saddling up to the coffee counter at a small town cafe and taking in the local color.

The Cedar Falls singer-songwriter harmonizes about the stuff of daily living --- the weather, true love, a good dog.

But the 53-year-old adds just enough tantalizing details and clever wordplay to keep you rubbernecking until he finishes his story.

"It's about people's personal experiences, and other people can relate to that," Schneider said of his work. "(Folk singer) John Prine wrote a song called 'The Same Thing Happened to Me,' and that's a lot of the appeal."

Schneider, a rhythm guitarist, will be featured at 7 p.m. today on KUNI's Live from Studio One program. The show is staged on the third floor studios in the Communication Arts Center on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls.

"Raldo's kind of a low-key guy, but he can be very humorous and he's a got a definite way with words," said Karen Impola, Studio One host and producer. "This is a chance to see a him in an intimate setting."

During the hour-long radio program, Schneider plans to play songs he's penned throughout the last two decades.

"We are going to play some real old stuff, and we are going to play at least one song in particular that I wrote less than a year ago," Schneider said. "Mostly, I'm going to try to concentrate on songs about the outdoors. I have two or three songs about snow. I have a rain song; a song about a river."

The Americana artist will be joined on stage by John Stortz on lead guitar and Travis Smiley on bass guitar. The acoustic trio has been playing together for about 12 years.

"Both Travis and I have a lot of respect for Raldo and we enjoy his songwriting," Stortz said. "He's a very solid Midwestern person --- very honest and dependable ---- we never get tired of playing his songs."

Schneider has been a fixture on the local music scene for the last 20 years, and has been featured on Studio One in the past. Still, Impola calls the musician a well-kept secret.

"He's just as good as a lot of people who are nationally-touring performers, but I guess he doesn't pursue it in that way," Impola said. "We're lucky to have him in the area. He definitely has the talent."

Show Notes:
-- **with Ken Kesey on harmonica
-- Seamless transition between discs 2 and 3.
-- This second set is incredible!!!

Matrix Notes:

1)The the right channel of the Glassberg AUD was increased 4 dB. The audio channels were uneven.

2)The Glassberg source (the preferred source for this matrix) appears to contain 2 AUD sources in it. Towards the end of Drums there is a cut in the AUD; after the cut, a strikingly different sounding AUD is patched into the source. The quality of this “other” source was pretty bad, with some bass overload. Very luckily, Jim Wise's AUD was available and sounds just as good as Glassberg's, so I used it from that section in Drums onward to the end of the show. The audience happens to be a little more “defined” in Wise's source, but I ultimately prefer Glassberg's AUD for its richer tonal quality. So, there is a “complementary” shift in sound during Drums, but it sounds pretty much the same and is all good.

3)There were cuts in the AUD and SBD. Significantly, there were cuts in the SBD during Jack Straw (first few seconds), Shakedown Street (first 2:08 of track), Playing in the Band (8:33-9:41), and Sugar Magnolia (last few seconds of song).

4)There were some wacky fluctuations in the SBD mix during the earlier portion of Set 1. There will be moments of extra hiss, changes in vocal and guitar sound, sounds levels, etc. Some of it may be some exciting pedal work by Garcia, but this has not been verified.

5)Enjoy at high volume.

Live at the Greek is a double live album by Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes, released by TVT Records on July 4, 2000. In October 1999, Page teamed up with The Black Crowes for a two-night performance of material from the Led Zeppelin catalogue and old blues and rock standards. Due to contractual problems with their record company, The Black Crowes were unable to release any of their own songs which were played at the Greek shows. These songs, on which Jimmy Page played with the Crowes, included: "Wiser Time", "No Speak No Slave", "Remedy", "Hard to Handle", and "She Talks to Angels". The double CD features an enhanced Quicktime video and photographs taken during the concert, released first on the internet before appearing in stores. The Japanese version of the album also features "Misty Mountain Hop" and "In the Light", recorded in 2000.

I was going to grab discs 6-8 since the version I've had for years is only 5 discs.
